Puckett and T. Crowley report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 16.7) on an unfiltered CCD frame taken with the 0.50-m automated supernova patrol telescope on Mar. 7.43 UT. The new object was confirmed on CCD frames taken by G. Sostero, Remanzacco, Italy, with a 0.25-m reflector on Mar. 8.02 at mag 16.6. SN 2005ao is located at R.A. = 17h44m59s.07, Decl. = +61o56'53".1 (equinox 2000.0), which is 13".1 east and 31".5 south of the center of NGC 6462. Nothing is present at this location on images taken by Puckett on 2002 Feb. 13 and 2003 Apr. 2, (limiting mag about 20.0).
