O. Waagen, AAVSO, report the CCD discovery of a variable star near M27 by Joerg Hanisch (Gescher, Germany) on unfiltered CCD images taken on about Aug. 18.0 UT (the mag given as about 15.8) and independently by Hans-Goeran Lindberg (Skultuna, Sweden) on an image taken on Aug. 18.9. Hanisch provides the following position for the variable: R.A. = 19h59m51s.29, Decl. = +22o42'32".3 (equinox 2000.0). Renz also forwards the following position end figures obtained by D. Boyd (Oxfordshire, U.K., 0.35-m reflector) from CCD frames taken on Aug. 21.92: 51s.283, 32".13. Hanisch adds that a USNO-B1.0 star of red mag 17.3 has position end figures 51s.04, 35".4, but that there is no bright, very red star present at the location of the variable on Digitized Sky Survey infrared plates or on 2MASS J, H and K_s images. Waagen and A. Henden suspect that the new variable, which is blue and has an amplitude of at least 9 magnitudes, may well be a WZ-Sge-type cataclysmic variable, and provide the following CCD magnitudes (unfiltered unless otherwise noted) reported to the AAVSO: Aug. 16.937, 15.6 (N. Quinn, Steyning, W. Sussex, England; prediscovery); 21.916, V = 16.17 (Boyd); 21.917, I = 16.00 (Boyd); 21.935, V = 16.69 (D. Rodriguez, Madrid, Spain); 22.998, V = 16.16 (Boyd); 22.997, I_c = 15.82 (Boyd).
