Thomas, L. Wang, and B. A. Weaver, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley; R. Kessler, Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics, Chicago; and C. Baltay, D. Rabinowitz, and A. Bauer, Yale University) reports the discovery of a supernova (mag approximately 16.3, calibrated to R) in images obtained on Nov. 17.5 UT with the QUEST II camera on the Palomar Oschin 1.2-m Schmidt in the course of the NEAT program (cf. CBET 263). SN 2005kj is located at R.A. = 8h40m09s.18, Decl. = -5o36'02".2 (equinox 2000.0). A spectrum (range 320-1000 nm), obtained Nov. 20.6 with the Supernova Integral Field Spectrograph (SNIFS) on the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope, shows 2005kj to be a type-IIn supernova at a redshift of z = 0.016, exhibiting H-alpha (FWHM 1300 km/s), H-beta, H-gamma, and He I 587.6-nm in emission. The observed redshift is consistent with that of the host galaxy (2MASX J08400884-0536039, z = 0.01698; Jones et al. 2005, The 6DF Galaxy Survey Data Release 2). A spectrogram of SN 2005ki (CBET 294), obtained Nov. 20.6 with SNIFS, shows it to be a young, blue type-Ia supernova. The spectrum is similar to that of SN 1994D at an age of -9 days with respect to maximum, at a redshift consistent with that of the host galaxy, NGC 3332 (z = 0.019607; Falco et al. 1999, PASP 111, 438).
