Electronic Telegram No. 486 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION M.S. 18, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. IAUSUBS@CFA.HARVARD.EDU or FAX 617-495-7231 (subscriptions) CBAT@CFA.HARVARD.EDU (science) URL http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/cbat.html SUPERNOVA 2006ay A. V. Filippenko and R. J. Foley (University of California, Berkeley) report that inspection of a CCD spectrum (range 320-920 nm), obtained on Apr. 27 UT with the Keck I 10-m telescope (+ LRIS), shows that SN 2006ay (cf. IAUC 8691) is a type-Ia supernova, about 2 months past maximum brightness. The recession velocity of the host galaxy, measured from narrow emission lines in a superposed H II region, is about 26000 km/s -- a factor of six larger than the average recession velocity of the four main galaxies of Seyfert's Sextet (4300 km/s), and exceeding the velocity of its discordant component (19800 km/s).
