SUPERNOVA 2006ss IN NGC 5579
     S. Blondin, M. Modjaz, R. Kirshner, and P. Challis, Harvard-Smithsonian
Center for Astrophysics, report that a spectrum (range 350-740 nm) of 2006ss
(cf. CBET 774), obtained on Dec. 21.57 UT by M. Calkins with the F. L.
Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST), shows it to be a type-IIb
supernova.  Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra indicates
that 2006ss is similar to SN 1993J at 19 days past explosion (Matheson et al.
2000, A.J. 120, 1487; see the following URL for a comparison plot:
