Harutyunyan, M. Turatto, and E. Cappellaro, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica and Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, report that a spectrogram (range 340-790 nm) of 2007ap (cf. CBET 883), obtained on Mar. 15.125 UT in Asiago with the Galileo 1.22-m telescope (+ Boller & Chivens spectrograph) shows it to be a type-Ia supernova. Assuming a recession velocity of 4742 km/s (Wegner et al. 1999, MNRAS 305, 259; via NED) for the host galaxy, the 'PASSparToo' spectrum comparison code (Harutyunyan et al. 2005, ASP Conf. Ser. 342, 258) provides good fits to spectra of SNe 1992A, 1996X, and 1994D between 2 and 6 days after B-maximum light. The phase is confirmed by the expansion velocity deduced from the Si II 635.5-nm absorption feature (about 10700 km/s).
