Wang, A. V. Filippenko, and W. Li, University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of CCD spectra (range 330-1030 nm), obtained on Dec. 1 UT with the Shane 3-m reflector (+ Kast spectrograph) at Lick Observatory, shows that 2007ru (CBET 1149) is a peculiar type-Ic supernova before maximum brightness. Unlike the case in most other type-Ic supernovae, the Ca II H-and-K and Ca II near-infrared- triplet absorption troughs are weak. If the absorption feature near 730 nm is attributed to O I 777.4-nm, it is blueshifted by about 19000 km/s.
