Electronic Telegram No. 1179 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION M.S. 18, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. IAUSUBS@CFA.HARVARD.EDU or FAX 617-495-7231 (subscriptions) CBAT@CFA.HARVARD.EDU (science) URL http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/iau/cbat.html SUPERNOVA 2007ss IN NGC 4617 K. Ayani and N. Murakami, Bisei Astronomical Observatory (BAO); and H. Yamaoka, Kyushu University, report that a low-resolution (R about 1300) spectrum of 2007ss (cf. CBET 1175), taken on Dec. 23.8 UT with the BAO 1.0-m telescope, shows deep and wide absorption features of Si II and Fe II, which suggests that the object is a type-Ia supernova around maximum. Assuming the recession velocity of the host galaxy as 4655 km/s (de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991, Third Feference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies), the expansion velocity (derived from the absorption minimum of Si II 635.5-nm) is 11600 km/s.
