IAUSUBS@CFA.HARVARD.EDU or FAX 617-495-7231 (subscriptions) CBAT@CFA.HARVARD.EDU (science) URL http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/iau/cbat.html SUPERNOVA 2008M IN ESO 121-026 Cristovao Jacques, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, reports the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 15.5) on an unfiltered CCD image (limiting magnitude 18.5) taken on Jan. 15.12 UT with a 0.30-m Schmidt-Cassegrain f/3 reflector in the course of the Brazilian Supernovae Search by C. Colesanti, E. Pimentel, T. Napoleao, and himself; a confirming image on Jan. 17.96 shows the new object at mag 15.4. SN 2008M is located at R.A. = 6h21m41s.28, Decl. = -59d43'45".4 (equinox 2000.0), which is 16".5 east and 38".6 north of the center of the galaxy ESO 121-26. Nothing is visible at this position on CCD images taken on 2004 Apr. 7.02, and 2007 Dec. 28.1 (limiting mag 19.0); a red Digitzed Sky Survey plate shows a faint H II region close to the position of 2008M.
