Electronic Telegram No. 1435 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION M.S. 18, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. IAUSUBS@CFA.HARVARD.EDU or FAX 617-495-7231 (subscriptions) CBAT@CFA.HARVARD.EDU (science) URL http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/iau/cbat.html SUPERNOVAE 2008du AND 2008dw T. N. Steele, R. Mostardi, C. V. Griffith, and A. V. Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of CCD spectra (range 330-1000 nm), obtained on July 4 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+ Kast) at Lick Observatory, shows that 2008du (CBET 1423) is a type-Ic supernova, near maximum brightness. SN 2008dw (CBET 1426) is a type-II supernova, also near maximum brightness. The emission component of H-alpha greatly dominates over the absorption component, though the other members of the hydrogen Balmer series have more typical P-Cyg profiles.
