Electronic Telegram No. 1444 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION M.S. 18, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. IAUSUBS@CFA.HARVARD.EDU or FAX 617-495-7231 (subscriptions) CBAT@CFA.HARVARD.EDU (science) URL http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/iau/cbat.html SUPERNOVA 2008eg IN UGC 1324 Further to CBET 1440, W. Li and A. V. Filippenko, University of California at Berkeley, report the LOSS discovery of an apparent supernova on unfiltered KAIT images: SN 2008 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset 2008eg July 20.48 1 51 36.27 +19 06 16.9 16.2 0".3 W, 5".6 N Nothing was visible at this location on a KAIT image taken on Jan. 20.15 UT (limiting mag 19.0). A. Harutyunyan, S. Benetti, and F. Sabbadin, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, report that a spectrum of 2008eg, obtained on July 21.19 UT with the 3.5-m TNG reflector (+ DOLORES; range 340-775 nm, resolution 1.1 nm), shows it to be a type-Ia supernova around maximum light. The best fit to this spectrum found by GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, http://lanl.arxiv.org/abs/0804.1939) is with a spectrum of SN 1996X (cf. Salvo et al. 2001, MNRAS 321, 254) at two days before maximum light. Adopting a recession velocity of 10090 km/s for the host galaxy (Giovanelli and Haynes 1993, A.J. 105, 1271; via NED), the expansion velocity deduced from the Si II 635.5-nm absorption is about 10700 km/s.
