Electronic Telegram No. 1695 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION M.S. 18, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. IAUSUBS@CFA.HARVARD.EDU or FAX 617-495-7231 (subscriptions) CBAT@CFA.HARVARD.EDU (science) URL http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/iau/cbat.html SUPERNOVA 2009ad IN UGC 3236 M. Phillips and N. Morrell, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project, report a spectrum (range 440-1000 nm) of 2009ad (cf. CBET 1694) obtained on Feb. 15.08 UT with the 6.5-m Magellan I Baade telescope (+ IMACS) at Las Campanas Observatory, which they classify as a young, type-Ia supernova. Comparison with a library of supernova spectra via the Supernova Identification tool (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) suggests that 2009ad is around 10 days before maximum light. Assuming for the host galaxy (UGC 3236) the NED recession velocity of 8514 km/s (Haynes et al. 1997, A.J. 113, 1197), they find the minimum of the 635.5-nm Si II absorption to be blueshifted by approximately 10800 km/s.
