Stritzinger, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project, report a that spectrum (range 380-923 nm) of 2009bu (cf. CBET 1740), obtained on Mar. 29.4 UT with the Las Campanas 2.5-m du Pont telescope (+ WFCCD), reveals it to be a young type-II supernova. Comparison with a library of supernova spectra via the Supernova Identification tool (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) gives an excellent match with several type II-P events within 1 to 5 days past explosion. Adopting a host-galaxy recession velocity of 3494 km/s (H I Parkes All-Sky Survey Final Catalogue, Wong et al. 2006, MNRAS 371, 1855) for the host galaxy, NGC 7408, the minimum of the H-beta absorption is measured to be blue-shifted by 9500 km/s.
