Morrell, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project, reports that a spectrum (range 340-960 nm) of 2009ev (cf. CBET 1814), obtained on May 31.20 UT with the du Pont 2.5-m telescope (+ Boller and Chivens spectrograph) at Las Campanas Observatory, reveals this is a type-Ia supernova around maximum brightness. Adopting for NGC 5026 the NED redshift of 3549 km/s (de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991, Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies, ver. 3.9) an expansion velocity of 11800 km/s is derived from the minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm absorption in the supernova spectrum. Cross correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the Supernova Identification code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap. J. 666, 1024) yields excellent matches with a number of normal type-Ia supernovae at ages ranging from 7 days before maximum to 5 days after maximum light.
