Ergon, Stockholm University; C. Inserra, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica; and S. Valenti, Queen's University, report on spectroscopic observations (range 350-900 nm, resolution 0.8 nm) of 2009md (cf. CBET 2065) obtained with the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT; + ALFOSC) on Dec. 8.27 UT; the observations were obtained by P. A. Wilson (NOT), S. Jon Juliusson (University of Iceland), and four high-school students: H. Holma and M. Ingemyr (Rymdgymnasiet, Sweden), O. Saxen (Katedralskolan i Abo, Finland), and L. Haukanes (Stord vidaregaande skule, Norway). The fully reduced spectrum of 2009md shows it to be a young type-II supernova. Cross- correlation of the spectrum with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows it to be most similar to the type-IIP supernova 2005cs close to maximum light.
