Electronic Telegram No. 2175 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION CBAT Director: Daniel W. E. Green; Room 209; Dept. of Earth and Planetary Sciences; Harvard University; 20 Oxford St.; Cambridge, MA 02138; U.S.A. e-mail: cbat@cfa.harvard.edu; dwe_green@eps.harvard.edu URL http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/iau/cbat.html SUPERNOVAE 2009lj AND 2009lw J. M. Silverman, S. B. Cenko, and A. V. Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of CCD spectra (range 450-960 nm), obtained on Feb. 15 UT with the 10-m Keck II telescope (+ DEIMOS), shows that 2009lj (CBET 2027) is a type-Ic supernova. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova IDentification" code of Blondin and Tonry (2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that 2009lj is a few months past maximum brightness. SN 2009lw (CBET 2047) is a type-Ib or possibly a type-IIb supernova, also a few months past maximum light.
