Electronic Telegram No. 2759 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION CBAT Director: Daniel W. E. Green; Hoffman Lab 209; Harvard University; 20 Oxford St.; Cambridge, MA 02138; U.S.A. e-mail: cbatiau@eps.harvard.edu (alternate cbat@iau.org) URL http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/index.html Prepared using the Tamkin Foundation Computer Network SUPERNOVA 2011dx IN NGC 1376 = PSN J03370500-0501560 L. A. G. Monard, Calitzdorp, Western Cape, South Africa, reports his discovery of an apparent supernova (magnitude 16.5) on unfiltered CCD images taken on June 27.182 UT at the Klein Karoo Observatory. The new object (which was designated PSN J03370500-0501560 when posted at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2011dx based on the spectroscopic confirmation reported below) is located at R.A. = 3h37m05s.61, Decl. = -5d01'56".3 (equinox 2000.0), which is 6" west and 40" north of the core of the Scd-type galaxy NGC 1376. Nothing is seen at this position in Digitized Sky Survey images down to limiting red magnitude 20.5. Additional CCD magnitudes for 2011dx: Mar. 29.742, [18.5 (Monard); June 28.173, 16.6; July 1.815, 16.9 (Joseph Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia; red filter used; position end figures 05s.58, 56".1). Brimacombe's image is posted at website URL http://www.flickr.com/photos/43846774@N02/5892368075/. J. L. Prieto, Carnegie Observatories, reports that a spectrogram (range 380-920 nm; resolution 0.7 nm) of PSN J03370500-0501560 = SN 2011dx was obtained on July 3 UT with WFCCD mounted on the du Pont 2.5-m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. The SNID cross-correlation software (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) was used to aid identification and age/redshift estimation. PSN J03370500-0501560 is an old type-Ia supernova. The best template fit to the spectrum is the peculiar supernova 2000cx at 1 month after maximum light; however, there are also good fits using supernova- 1991T-like spectra at similar epochs.
