Prasad, and W. Li report the LOSS discovery of an apparent supernova on unfiltered KAIT images taken on Sept. 18.54 (at mag 17.0), 19.54 (mag 16.8), and 28.51 UT (mag 16.4). SN 2006is is located at R.A. = 5h17m34s.37, Decl. = -23o46'54".2 (equinox 2000.0), which is 2".1 west and 4".9 north of a faint galaxy (the new object also being 103".1 east and 130".1 north of the nucleus of ESO 486-G49). There are several faint galaxies visible on the Digitized Sky Survey images in the neighborhood of the new object. A KAIT image taken on Feb. 4.11 showed nothing at this position (limiting mag 19.0). N. Morrell, G. Folatelli, and W. Krzeminski, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project, report that 2006is was detected at V = 16.2 in u', B, and V CCD images obtained on Sept. 30.4 UT with the 1.0-m Swope telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, providing position end figures 34s.37, 54".5. A spectrogram, obtained by A. Dressler and D. Ossip on Oct. 1.34 with the IMACS Spectrograph attached to the Magellan I Baade telescope at Las Campanas, confirms the new object as a type-Ia supernova around maximum light. The supernova is most probably hosted by the faint galaxy located 3".2 east and 6".5 south of the position of the supernova (the same galaxy noted by Mostardi et al. above, and also mentioned by Maddox et al. 1990, MNRAS 243, 692).
