Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the discovery by Koichi Itagaki (Teppo-cho, Yamagata, Japan) of an apparent supernova (mag 17.0) on multiple 15-s unfiltered CCD frames (limiting magnitude 19.0) taken on Dec. 29.865 UT using a 0.60-m f/5.7 reflector. The new object is located at R.A. = 14h10m58s.72, Decl. = +6d21'47".9 (equinox 2000.0), which is 20" east and 6" south of the center of NGC 5491. Nothing is visible at this position on the Digitized Sky Survey or on Itagaki's image taken on 2005 May 3 UT (limiting magnitude 19.0). The discovery image has been posted at website URL http://www.k-itagaki.jp/images/psn5491.jpg. Nakano adds that sixteen 180-s unfiltered CCD frames (limiting mag 18.8) taken by K. Kadota (Ageo, Japan, 0.25-m f/5 reflector) on Dec. 30.80 in strong moonlight were co-added to yield mag 17.2 and position end figures 58s.77, 47".8 for 2009nk.
