Electronic Telegram No. 2716 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION CBAT Director: Daniel W. E. Green; Hoffman Lab 209; Harvard University; 20 Oxford St.; Cambridge, MA 02138; U.S.A. e-mail: cbatiau@eps.harvard.edu (alternate cbat@iau.org) URL http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/index.html Prepared using the Tamkin Foundation Computer Network SUPERNOVA 2011cf IN NGC 2939 = PSN J09380828+0931111 Further to CBET 2702, M. Kandrashoff, K. Lin, S. B. Cenko, W. Li, and A. V. Filippenko report the LOSS discovery of an apparent supernova on unfiltered KAIT images: SN 2011 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset 2011cf Apr. 28.24 9 38 08.28 + 9 31 11.1 18.2 5".9 E, 14".8 S The new object was designated PSN J09380828+0931111 when posted on the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2011cf based on the spectroscopic report below. Additional KAIT magnitudes for 2011cf: 2010 Apr. 12.21 UT, [19.3; 2011 May 1.17, 18.0. The type-IIP supernova 2009ao also appeared in NGC 2939 (cf. CBET 1711). J. M. Silverman, W. Li, and A. V. Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of a CCD spectrum (range 340-1000 nm), obtained by G. Canalizo, K. Hiner, and M. Lazarova (University of California, Riverside) on May 5 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+ Kast) at Lick Observatory, shows that PSN J09380828+0931111 = SN 2011cf is a highly reddened type-II supernova. The spectrum shows a red continuum, with the broad H-alpha emission component greatly dominating over the absorption component.
