Ciabattari and E. Mazzoni, Borgo a Mozzano, Italy, report the discovery of a possible supernova (mag 18.2) on unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag 19.1) obtained on Aug. 26.08 UT with a 0.5-m Newtonian telescope in the course of the Italian Supernovae Search Project. The new object is located at R.A. = 1h18m07s.80, Decl. = +17d33'29".8 (equinox 2000.0; astrometry with respect to UCAC-2 stars), which is 6" west and 15" south of the center of the galaxy NGC 459. Nothing is visible at this position on digitized plates of the Palomar Sky Survey from 1987 Aug. 24 (J plate; limiting magnitude 20.3) and 1989 Nov. 4 (F plate; limiting magnitude 20.3). The variable was designated as PSN J01180780+1733298 when it was posted on the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2011fv based on the spectroscopy reported below. Cappellaro, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica; and A. Pastorello, Dipartimento di Astronomia, Universita di Padova, on behalf of a larger collaboration, report that a spectrogram (range 360-810 nm; resolution 2.2 nm) of PSN J01180780+1733298 = SN 2011fv, obtained on Sept. 24.04 UT, is that of a type-II supernova. Together with P-Cyg Balmer H lines, Fe II features are clearly detected, suggesting that the supernova was observed a few weeks after its explosion.
