Electronic Telegram No. 5059 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Mailing address: Hoffman Lab 209; Harvard University; 20 Oxford St.; Cambridge, MA 02138; U.S.A. e-mail: cbatiau@eps.harvard.edu (alternate cbat@iau.org) URL http://www.cbat.eps.harvard.edu/index.html Prepared using the Tamkin Foundation Computer Network JUPITER J. Watanabe, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan; and K. Arimatsu, The Hakubi Center, Kwasan Observatory, Kyoto University, report the detection of an optical flash on Jupiter as detected on Oct. 15d13h24m13s UT (time uncertain by +/- 10 s) in video imaging undertaken by Arimatsu with a 0.279-m Celestron C11 telescope (+ IMX464 CMOS camera + CH4-band filter) at Kyoto. The CH4 filter at 889 nm has a bandwidth of 30 nm. The flash was seen at longitude 201 degrees (system II) and latitude +20 degrees on Jupiter and lasted approximately three seconds. The same flash was simultaneously detected with another CMOS camera (IMX290 camera + filter with bandpass 500-750 nm) attached to the same telescope through a dichroic mirror.
