Circular No. 2701 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. Cable Address: SATELLITES, NEWYORK Western Union: RAPID SATELLITE CAMBMASS U CEPHEI A. H. Batten, Dominion Astrophysical Observatory; and B. W. Baldwin and C. D. Scarfe, University of Victoria, report: "Balmer emission has been observed in the spectrum of the eclipsing binary U Cep during the total phases of the eclipses of Sept. 7, 12 and 17. This emission is stronger than that previously reported (Batten 1969, Publ. Astron. Soc. Pacific 81, 904). The light curve was also unusual on Sept. 12, resembling that of a partially-eclipsing system. At minimum light the ultraviolet excess was unusually large. A spectrogram of H-alpha obtained on Sept. 16 showed emission visible even out of eclipse. There was also a second absorption component of all the lines H-alpha, H-beta, H-gamma and H-delta, with displacement corresponding to a velocity of approach of about 400 km/s. Continued observations by all means possible should be worth while." JUPITER I P. Wehinger and S. Wyckoff, Wise Observatory, write: "Image-tube spectrograms (150 A/mm dispersion, 3.5 A resolution, 5000-9000 A spectral region) were obtained of the orbital plane of Jupiter I (Io) on Aug. 11-13 and 25-27. Spectra obtained with the slit oriented at a variety of positions both parallel and perpendicular to Io's orbital plane indicate the presence of a highly flattened Na emission disk centered at Jupiter with a radius of approximately 24 Rjup. On Aug. 27.9 UT the thickness of the disk was ~ 2 Rjup at 9 Rjup east of Jupiter. On Aug. 29.0, with Io near western quadrature, the Na emission observed was some three times the intensity of the Na emission at the corresponding point on the opposite side of Jupiter. Over the six nights of observation, only the Na D lines were observed in emission; their intensity appeared to be variable, while the D1/D2 ratio remained constant."
