4U 1145-61
     N. E. White, Mullard Space Sciences Laboratory, reports that
Ariel 5 observations centered on 4U 1145-61 during Sept. 20-Oct. 4
have revealed x-ray pulsations with a period of 4.954 +/- 0.004 min.
Variations in this period indicate orbital motion with a period of
14-18 days. The optical candidate HD 102567 has been proposed.

IC 4997
     W. A. Feibelman, Goddard Space Flight Center, reports that
microdensitometer tracings of spectrograms of the variable planetary
nebula IC 4997 show that the intensity of [O III] 4363 A is now at
least as high as that of H-gamma. This represents a significant change
in the behavior of the intensity ratio, which had been monotonically
decreasing between 1895 and 1969 (when it was considerably less
than unity). The spectrograms were obtained on Aug. 19.05 and
26.06 UT by C. W. McCracken, L. W. Brown and R. W. Hobbs using the
Goddard 91-cm telescope equipped with the Cassegrain spectrograph
(dispersions 41 and 82 A/mm) and image intensifier.

NEBULA NEAR CL4
     F. Vrba, U.S. Naval Observatory, informs us that further
observations show this (cf. IAUC 3116) to be a spurious image caused by
internal reflection within the camera from a nearby bright star.

     C. W. McCracken, Goddard Space Flight Center, reports that a
spectrogram of comet 1977m was obtained on Oct. 5.05 UT by L. W.
Brown, R. W. Hobbs and himself using the 91-cm reflector equipped
with the Cassegrain spectrograph and an image intensifier. The exposure
time was 1 hour, the dispersion 215 A/mm and the spectral
range covered 3000-7500 A.  Emission from NH, CN, C2, [O I] and
(probably) C3 was detected. No emission was detected from OH, CH,
NH2 or CO . The comet was diffuse with a slight central condensation.
The continuum was very weak, implying low dust-gas ratio.

     Selected total visual magnitude estimates: Sept. 28.01 UT, 8.1
(C. S. Morris, Woburn, Massachusetts, 20 x 80 binoculars; coma diameter
~ 11'); 30.00, 7.9 (J. Bortle, Brooks Observatory, 10 x 50 binoculars;
32-cm reflector showed 25' narrow tail in p.a. 60o); Oct.
2.08, 8.4 (P. Maley, Houston, Texas, 13-cm refractor); 5.02, 7.8
(Bortle, 10 x 50 binoculars; 32-cm reflector showed 6' tail in p.a.
65o); 8.03, 7.3 (S. O'Meara, Harvard Observatory, 8-cm finder; 23-cm
refractor showed tails 25' in p.a. 50o, 10' in 0o, 5' in 295o);
10.05, 7.5 (C. Sherrod, North Little Rock, Arkansas, 15-cm refractor);
11.02, 7.5 (Morris; 30' tail); 12.01, 7.4 (Morris).
