X PERSEI (= 4U 0352+30)
     E. F. Guinan and G. P. McCook, Villanova University Observatory;
and J. D. Dorren, Biruni Observatory, Shiraz, report new
photoelectric observations of X Per using wide- and narrow-band
filters centered near H-alpha. An increase in light of about 0.23
magnitude was detected between 1977 Aug. 10 and 1978 Jan. 16.
Observations obtained in February indicate that the light has begun
slowly to decrease, having diminished by ~ 0.03 magnitude on Feb.
19. During this interval no appreciable change in the H-alpha-1ine
strength was uncovered. The light variation appears to be approximately
sinusoidal and consistent with the ~ 584-day spectroscopic
period found by Hutchings et al. (1974, Astrophys. J. 191, L101).
If this is the case, then the preliminary analysis of the data is
consistent with tidal distortion of the visible component produced
by a very massive (>~ 20 Msol) unseen companion.
