Circular No. 3278 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 NOVA CYGNI 1978 S. Yang, University of British Columbia; and R. Carlberg, University of Victoria, report that a change in the blue wing of the H-alpha emission profile, suggesting absorption, was detected between Sept. 18.46 and 19.20 UT. A series of eight spectra obtained with the U.B.C. 1024 Reticon system on the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory's 120-cm telescope had a resolution of 0.48 A/pixel (20 A/mm). No short-term variations were evident in the profile. R. J. Pfeiffer, University of Pennsylvania and Trenton State University, provides the following polarization data: in the red, P = 1.63 +/- 0.07 percent, theta(equatorial) = 31o.5 +/- 1o.2 on Sept. 16.05 UT; green, P = 1.45 +/- 0.09 percent, theta = 35o.0 +/- 1o.7 on Sept. 16.08; blue, P = 1.71 +/- 0.07 percent, theta = 31o.7 +/- 1o.2 on Sept. 16.10; ultraviolet, P = 2.55 +/- 0.08 percent, theta = 30o.6 +/- 0o.9 on Sept. 16.14. V. Piirola and T. Korhonen, Tuorla Observatory and the University of Turku, report that the following linear polarization data were obtained on Sept. 16.83 UT: in the V band, P = 1.52 +/- 0.02 (m.e.) percent, theta(equatorial) = 41o.6 +/- 0o.4 (m.e.); B, P = 1.60 +/- 0.02 percent, theta = 39o.9 +/- 0o.4; U, P = 1.48 +/- 0.03 percent, theta = 37o.7 +/- 0o.7. Assuming the polarization to be interstellar, the lower limits for the interstellar absorption and reddening were found to be: A(V) = 0.53 magnitude, E(B-V) = 0.18 magnitude. L. Baldinelli, Bologna, communicates the following photoelectric data, obtained using the 40-cm reflector at the Horn D'Arturo Observatory: Sept. 12.8403 UT, V = 6.35 +/- 0.01, B-V = +0.63 +/- 0.03, U-B = -0.04 +/- 0.03; 14.8517, 6.66 +/- 0.00, +0.50 +/- 0.01, -0.44 +/- 0.01; 18.8488, 7.40 +/- 0.05; +0.29 +/- 0.06, -0.75 +/- 0.11. For the comparison star, HD 206280, it was assumed that mv = 6.72, B-V = -0.06, U-B = -0.21. Visual magnitude estimates: Sept. 26.29 UT, 8.2 (P. L. Collins, Mount Hopkins Observatory); 28.13, 8.5 (J. McMahon, Millville, NJ); 30.03, 8.3 (J. Bortle, Brooks Observatory); Oct. 1.02, 8.2 (Bortle); 3.01, 8.9 (S. O'Meara, Harvard College Observatory). TIME ADJUSTMENT ON 1978 DECEMBER 31 The Bureau International de l'Heure informs us that a positive leap second will occur such that the sequence of UTC second markers will be: 1978 Dec. 31d23h59m59s, 31d23h59m60s, 1979 Jan. 1d00h00m00s. 1978 October 4 (3278) Brian G.
