Circular No. 3424 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 SUPERNOVA IN ESO 153-G27 J. Maza, Department of Astronomy, University of Chile, reports the discovery of a supernova 6" west and 15" north of the nucleus of ESO 153-G27 (R.A. = 2h08m48s, Decl. = -54o04'.3, equinox 1950.0). Photographic magnitudes: Aug. 19.338 UT, 18-18.5; Sept. 16.277, 19; Oct. 15.168, 20.5. tau CETI B. Campbell, Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Corporation, reports that spectrophotometry of tau Cet (G8V) with the University of British Columbia's reticon detector at the Mauna Kea Observatory's 2.2-m telescope showed an emission event at Ca II 866.2 nm on Sept. 9. Spectra obtained at 0.02-nm resolution showed a rising core emission feature in the last 2-3 hours of the night. Besides the prominent core emission reversal (maximum equivalent width ~ 0.01 nm) the wings of Ca II are also filled in. Single spectra on Sept. 10 and Oct. 8 showed no peculiar features. SS 433 J. C. Kemp, University of Oregon, informs us that the fourth sentence on IAUC 3421 should be changed as follows: "A best interpolated epoch for light minimum is 1979 Sept. 14.23 UT. Our period is best given as 6.45 +/- 0.07 days, which is consistent with half the Crampton-et-al. period of 13.08 +/- 0.07 days."
