Circular No. 3499 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 COMET UNCONFIRMED Yu. V. Pskovskij, Sternberg Astronomical Institute, Moscow, informs us that the first observer of the comet whose discovery was claimed on IAUC 3498 should be Chernis, not Chernykh. Other observers have failed to confirm the comet. PERIODIC COMET KOHOUTEK (1980j) H.-E. Schuster, European Southern Observatory, reports the recovery of this comet as follows: 1981 UT R. A. (1950) Decl. m1 Aug. 6.27292 23 29.07 + 4 32.6 19 7.31562 23 28.74 + 4 34.0 The indicated correction to the prediction by S. W. Milbourn (B.A.A. Hdbk. 1980; MPC 5325) is Delta-T = -0.68 day. 1980 PA Schuster adds that the recovery plates for P/Kohoutek also show a fast-moving asteroidal object, as follows: 1980 UT R. A. (1950) Decl. Mag. Aug. 6.27292 23 27 32.4 + 4 48 26 17 7.31562 23 30 17.9 + 5 19 49 NOTICE CONCERNING TELEGRAMS Telegram subscribers are advised that the address lists for the IAU telegram service are on file with Western Union (for North America) and with Western Union International (for the rest of the world). Hence there is necessarily some delay In making address changes and deletions (although new subscribers can be added separately). Some expense is involved in making these changes, and our practice has been to amend the lists twice a year. The closing dates for these changes are advertized on these Circulars, and subscribers who do not adhere to these dates cannot expect instant service as regards making changes. If a sudden address change causes WU or WUI to reject delivery, these companies will inform us in specific instances, and we shall act accordingly. 1980 August 8 (3499) Brian G. Marsden
