Circular No. 3655 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 POSSIBLE COMET SHCHERBANOVSKIJ G. R. Kastel', Institute for Theoretical Astronomy, Leningrad, communicates a report from I. M. Kopylov, Special Astrophysical Observatory, Zelenchukskaya, of the possible discovery of a comet by A. L. Shcherbanovskij, as follows: 1981 UT R. A. (1950) Decl. m1 Dec. 19.91042 9 57.2 +29 59 16 22.88472 9 56.8 +29 43 17 The object is diffuse, with neither condensation nor tail. HDE 245770 C. Bartolini, A. Bonifazi, A. Guarnieri and A. Piccioni, Istituto di Astronomia, University of Bologna; and A. Giangrande and F. Giovannelli, Istituto di Astrofisica Spaziale, Frascati, telex: "A preliminary inspection of spectra of HDE 245770 = A0535+26 obtained with the Bologna l.5-m telescope at Loiano between Oct. 31 and Dec. 17 reveals unusual activity for this star. H-alpha, H-beta, H-gamma and He I 587.6-nm lines are strongly in emssion. The emission features have weakened in recent days, but Ha and He I remain strong. UBV photoelectric photometry during the same period shows a fading of ~ 0.2 mag with respect to the practically constant luminosity of the last five years. It seems probable that the Be star is experiencing a shell ejection. This hypothesis is also supported by the presence of unusual absorption features, which were particularly strong on Dec. 6." PU VULPECULAE Visual magnitude estimates by G. M. Hurst, Wellingborough, England: July 2.97 UT, 9.2; 7.94, 8.8; 18.97, 8.6. NOTICE TO CONTRIBUTORS The recording machine attached to the Central Bureau's telephone number 617-864-5758 has now been repaired. However, communication by telex/TWX or telegram/cablegram to the TWX number 710-320-6842 (answerback ASTROGRAM CAM) is to be preferred. 1981 December 28 (3655) Brian G. Marsden
