Circular No. 3657 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 PROBABLE COMET R. D. Eberst, Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, writes that he has found the trail of a comet on a 60-min exposure of the ESO/SRC Southern Sky Survey, as follows: 1975 UT R. A. (1950) Decl. m1 May 11.53061 14 22 08 -26 51.2 15 The trail is oriented northwest-southeast. The failure of the comet to appear on another exposure of the area obtained with the 1.2-m U.K. Schmidt telescope 4 nights earlier indicates that the motion must have been to the southeast. SY MUSCAE A. G. Michalitsianos, Laboratory for Solar Physics and Astrophysics, Goddard Space Flight Center; and M. Kafatos, George Mason University, communicate: "IUE observations on 1981 Nov. 29 and Dec. 10 show that the symbiotic star SY Mus continues to undergo substantial enhancement in ultraviolet emission. C IV 155 nm has increased in emission intensity by a factor of 26 since 1981 June 11, N V 124 nm has increased by a factor of 5 and He II 164 nm by a factor of 13. Intercombination lines of O III, N III, Si III and C III have remained essentially at the same flux level since 1981 June 11 or have perhaps decreased slightly. The IUE FeS monitor recorded an apparent magnitude of 10.4 in both June and December, suggesting that the star system is not following the 623-day regular period indicated by the visual lightcurves of Greenstein (1937, Bull. Harvard Coll. No. 906) and Uitterdijk (1934, B.A.N. 7, 177). Visual observations are important now since the object may be entering an enhanced phase of ultraviolet and possibly optical emission." 29999-221-3666 If the middle digit of the middle group of figures on your address label is a 2, then the last four figures show the IAUC No. up to which you have paid. If this number is 3666 or less, fewer than ten issues remain in your subscription. The special renewal rate is $15.00 for 50 issues or $30.00 for 100, but back issues cost 50c apiece. Please remember to include your name, address and account number (29999 in the above example) with your renewal check. 1982 January 8 (3657) Brian G. Marsden
