Circular No. 3748 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 TT ARIETIS A. Shafter and R. Nolthenius, University of California at Los Angeles, report that spectroscopic observations of this novalike variable obtained on Nov. 13 and 15 using the University of Minn./UCSD 1.5-m reflector on Mt. Lemmon revealed the Balmer and He I emission to be strong (EW H-alpha ~ 10 nm) and extremely narrow. After correction for the instrumental profile the lines were found to have an intrinsic width of ~ 175 km/s FWHM. The overall spectrum, including the Balmer decrement, is remarkably similar to the low-state spectrum of MV Lyr (see Robinson et al. 1981, Ap. J. 251, 611). J. Patterson, observing TT Ari at Kitt Peak on Nov. 13, obtained the following magnitudes: U = 14.98, B = 16.31, V = 16.28, R = 15.66, I = 15.09. High-speed photometry by H. E. Bond and A. D. Grauer at Kitt Peak, and in Oct. by P. Szkody at Kitt Peak and by E. Kemper at Louisiana State University, shows a general absence of activity, with only occasional flickering. According to Bond, the system would brighten at times by as much as 1 mag. It appears that the mass transfer in TT Ari has become quite erratic and may be in the process of stopping completely. Z ANDROMEDAE Supporting J. Bortle's note on IAUC 3743, J. Mattei, AAVSO, informs us that observations by AAVSO members show that Z And has been fluctuating between mean visual mag 11.0 and 10.4 during its minimum since 1974. From May to Nov. this year the star has been at visual mag 10.6 +/- 0.3. COMET AUSTIN (1982g) Total visual magnitude estimate by J. Bortle, Stormville, NY (0.32-m reflector): Nov. 16.42 UT, 10.9.
