NOVA SERPENTIS 1983
     H. Kosai, Tokyo Astronomical Observatory, telexes that
spectrograms obtained on Mar. 4.82 and 8.81 UT by H. Maehara with the
1.05-m Schmidt telescope (4-degree prism) at Kiso show strong H-alpha
emission and a weak continuum. A position (equinox 1950.0, uncertainty
0'.1) from Kiso plates gives R.A. = 17h53m02s1, Decl. = -14deg00'47".
Magnitude estimates by M. Huruhata (Tri-X film with yellow
filter): Feb. 26.8 UT, 11.0; 27.8, 11.7; Mar. 4.8. 12.5.

     W. Wargau, H. Drechsel and J. Rahe, Remeis Observatory; C.
Cacciari, W. Wamsteker and A. Talavera, European Space Agency; K.
Beuermann, Berlin Technical University; and G. Shaviv, Tel Aviv
University, report that observations were obtained at the Villafranca
ground station from IUE during Mar. 5.25-5.41 UT. From the
fine-error sensor the position (equinox 1950.0, uncertainty 5")
was determined to be R.A. = 17h53m02s4, Decl. = -14deg00'57"; the
magnitude (at 520 nm) was 12.0 +/- 0.1. Low-dispersion spectrograms
were obtained over the ranges 120-200 and 200-320 nm. In the long-
wavelength range the continuum decreases strongly toward shorter
wavelengths because of the rather large reddening of E(B-V) = +0.4 +/-
0.1. In the short-wavelength range there seems to be a significant
continuum. The spectrum shows strong, broad, emission lines
of Mg II 280 nm, Al III 186 nm, He II 165 nm, C IV 155 nm and Si
IV 140 nm: the Mg II lines appears to be double peaked. There are
indications of a weak P-Cyg-type feature at C IV. All lines are
very broad with fwzi 8000 km/s.

NOVA MUSCAE 1983
Visual magnitude estimates by V. F. de Assis Neto, Sao
Francisco de Oliveira, Brazil: Feb. 18.06, 8.7; 22.06 UT, 9.0.
