SUPERNOVA IN ESO 270-G05
J. Maza, University of Chile, telexes that M. Wischnjewsky
discovered a possible supernova on an exposure by L. E. Gonzalez
on Apr. 6. It was 18" west and 10" south of the nucleus of ESO
270-G05 (R.A. = 13h18m7, Decl. = -45deg40', equinox 1950.0) and of
mpg 18.
SUPERNOVA IN NGC 4753
W. Wamsteker, A. Talavera and F. Machetto, European Space
Agency: and N. Panagia and G. G. C. Palumbo, Istituto di
Radioastronomia and Istituto Tesre, Bologna, report that a 50-min
ultraviolet spectrogram (range 200-300 nm) obtained with IUE at
the Villafranca ground station shows a weak spectrum, steeply
decreasing toward shorter wavelengths, characteristic of a type I
supernova. The fine-error-sensor magnitude (at 520 nm) was found
to be 12.7, but this includes a contribution from NGC 4753 itself.
The position of the supernova was determined to be R.A. =
12h49m17s4, Decl. = -0deg55'54" (equinox 1950.0).
A. Piccioni and G. Vettolani, Istituto di Astronomia and
Istituto di Radioastronomia, Bologna, telex that a spectrogram
obtained on Apr. 10.00 UT with Bologna University's 0.5-m Loiano
telescope shows this supernova to be of type I: absorption at 615
nm is prominent.
LMC X-1: ANOTHER MASSIVE BINARY?
J. B. Hutchings and D. Crampton, Dominion Astrophysical
Observatory: and A. P. Cowley, University of Michigan, report:
"Spectroscopy of the Pakull candidate star (IAUC 3472) for LMC X-1
shows it to be a binary of type ~ O7 with probable orbital period
3.909 days. Periods of 4.039, 3.747 and 4.381 days are also
possible. Orbital semiamplitude of ~ 65 km/s and antiphased N III
emission imply a companion mass >= 3 MO. Optical color and
searches for optical and x-ray variations would be of interest."

Further visual magnitude estimates: Mar. 5.18 UT, 12.2 (C. E.
Spratt, Victoria, BC); 13.17, 12.3 (Spratt); 21.17, 12.3 (Spratt);
30.1, 13.0 (J. Bortle, Stormville, NY); Apr. 6.1, 13.1 (Bortle).
