PERIODIC COMET AREND (1983q)
J. Gibson reports his recovery of this comet on exposures
with the 1.2-m Schmidt telescope at Palomar as follows:
1983 UT R.A. (1950.0) Decl. m2
Sept.16.48892 8 18 06.19 +36 39 35.4 20.5
17.49100 8 20 23.80 +36 35 46.2
The Sept. 16 position is uncertain because of a poor configuration
of reference stars and irregular star trails. The comet is well
condensed and has a hint of tail 15" long in p.a. 285. The position
is close to the prediction on MPC 7668 (elements MPC 7659).
PERIODIC COMET HARRINGTON-ABELL (1983r)
Gibson also reports the recovery of this comet:
1983 UT R.A. (1950.0) Decl. m2
Sept.17.46600 7 22 37.58 +31 17 07.2 20.5
18.47015 7 25 21.32 +31 13 08.4
The object, essentially of stellar appearance, is in close agree
ment with the prediction on MPC 7668 (elements MPC 7659).
PERIODIC COMET WILD 2 (1983s)
Gibson also reports a single observation of this comet, in
very close agreement with the prediction on MPC 7844 (elements MPC
7658). The comet has a short tail.
1983 UT R.A. (1950.0) Decl. m2

POSSIBLE SUPERNOVA IN NGC 7418
J. Maza, Department of Astronomy, University of Chile, telexes
that L. E. Gonzalez has discovered at Cerro El Roble a possible
supernova 11" west and 52" south of the nucleus of the Sc
galaxy NGC 7418 (R.A. = 22h53m8, Decl. = -37deg18', equinox 1950.0).
On Sept. 3 the object was at mpg = 15.5.
1983 September 23 (3867) Brian G. Marsden
