Circular No. 4025 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-495-7244/7440/7444 SUPERNOVA IN NGC 1023 I. M. Kopylov, Special Astrophysical Observatory; and E. P. Aksenov, Sternberg Astronomical Institute, cable that Nejzvestnij has discovered a supernova 45" west and 15" south of the nucleus of NGC 1023 (R.A. = 2h37m3, Decl. = +38deg51', equinox 1950.0). Visual magnitude estimates: 1984 Dec. 28.7 UT, 13.4; 28.8, 13.7. NOVA VULPECULAE 1984 No. 2 C.-Y. Shao, Center for Astrophysics, notes that there was no sign of the nova on a Damon patrol plate taken 1984 Dec. 17.95 UT. Further visual magnitude estimates: 1984 Dec. 29.74 UT, 5.8 (B. Thoet, Marseilles, France); 30.74, 6.0 (Thouet); 31.03, 6.3 (P. Sventek, Houston, TX); 31.74, 6.2 (Thouet); 1985 Jan. 1.08, 6.5 (L. Cook, Concord, CA); 2.05, 6.2 (Cook); 3.06, 6.7 (Cook). PERIODIC COMET HALLEY (1982i) C. Birkett and S. Green, Leicester University; A. Longmore, Royal Observatory, Edinburgh; and J. Zarnecki, University of Kent, report what is believed to be the first infrared detection of P/Halley. Observations were performed with the infrared photometer on the 3.8-m U.K. Infrared Telescope, using an 8" aperture, guiding first on the comet's predicted path, then on the same path after comet passage for background subtraction. Two separate 25- min observations on 1984 Dec. 20.5 UT yielded positive detections, each at about a 7-sigma level. The resulting mean gave a 1.25-micron mag J = 18.6 +/- 0.1. If one assumes this to be an observation of a bare nucleus, the observed magnitude would imply a nuclear radius of ~ 6 km for an assumed albedo of 0.1, but a contribution from scattering by dust cannot be excluded. NOTICE CONCERNING TELEGRAMS It is once again an 'open season' for making changes in the list of subscribers to the Central Bureau's telegram service. Subscribers who wish to make address changes, category changes, etc., are requested to inform us of said changes by Feb. 28. We regret that a charge of $50.00 must be made for address changes and deletions (but not additions) outside these biannual seasons. 1985 January 7 (4025) Brian G. Marsden
