PERIODIC COMET HALLEY (1982i)
A. Tokunaga, D. Griep, W. Golisch and C. Kaminski, University
of Hawaii, report the following magnitudes obtained with the NASA
Infrared Telescope Facility on Aug. 25, using a 7"3 aperture (
error ~ 0.1 mag): J = 14.1, H = 13.6, K = 13.4, N = 6.1, Q = 2.7.
Observations indicate a color temperature of ~ 180 K.
P. J. McCarthy, M. Strauss and H. Spinrad report imaging and
spectroscopy with a CCD camera on the Lick Observatory's Shane 3-m
telescope on Aug. 23.49 UT (r = 2.83 AU). The comet's integrated
magnitude in the Lick red band pass was r = 13.04 +/- 0.01. There
was a well-developed coma extending some 1'5 from the nucleus.
The spectra reveal the presence of strong emission from CN, C2 and
C3. Emission from neutral oxygen at 630-nm is extremely weak and
possibly undetected. The C2 emission extends over at least 2'.

continuing accurate observations of this object are necessary for
determining the mass of (4) Vesta; he provides an extended ephemeris:
