SUPERNOVA 1987F IN NGC 4615?
On Mar. 30, the Central Bureau received word from A. M.
Cherepashchuk, Sternberg State Astronomical Institute, that N.
Metlova reported a possible SN in this galaxy on Mar. 22.98 UT at
mpg = 15.5 (offset given as 20" due east of the galaxy's nucleus).
This was apparently the same object discovered by Schildknecht on
Apr. 23 (IAUC 4374). Following the Metlova report, the Bureau
requested confirmation from J. C. Wheeler, University of Texas; and
R. P. Kirshner, Center for Astrophysics, who both reported that
spectra obtained at McDonald and Whipple Observatories indicated
the object not to be a typical SN. Observations by A. Crotts at
the McDonald 2.7-m reflector yielded a rather featureless spectrum.
R. McMahan, Center for Astrophysics; and G. Wegner and S. Swanson,
Dartmouth College, report that spectra were obtained with the
McGraw-Hill 1.3-m and 2.4-m telescopes that show a blue continuum
and strong, primarily (narrow) H Balmer emission at the galaxy
redshift; these features faded significantly during Apr. 2-20. The
object is not present on the Palomar Sky Survey prints.

COMET TORRES (1987j)
The following observation by T. Seki, Geisei, is the only
known observation of this comet since Apr. 1 (cf. IAUC 4360):
