SUPERNOVA 1987A IN THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD
     P. Kaufmann, Instituto de Pesquisas Espaciais Radio, Sao
Paulo, reports the detection of SN 1987A at 22 GHz by D. F. M.
Rabaca and C. R. Rabaca with the 13.7-m mm-wave antenna at the
Itapetinga Radio Observatory. Weekly monitoring of the SN since
Feb. had previously yielded only upper limits close to 100 mJy.
The first definite detections occurred on June 20, 21, and 22 at
500 +/- 70 mJy (weighted mean). A series of confirming observations
by E. Scalise, Jr., J. L. Monteiro do Vale, B. Sestokas, and J. W.
S. Vilas Boas on June 25 yielded a SN brightness of 520 +/- 150 mJy.
     R. M. Catchpole, South African Astronomical Observatory,
communicates: "Observations of SN 1987A by L. Balona and F. Marang
show that the decline in V of 0.06 mag/day, present during the previous
20 days, has levelled off to a rate of 0.01 mag/day since about
June 24. This may indicate that SN 1987A is now on its final
radioactive decline as predicted by some models."
