AX PERSEI
     G. M. Hurst, Basingstoke, England, reports an outburst of AX
Per, as indicated by the following visual magnitude estimates: Jan.
6 UT, 11.6 (S. Korth, Monheim, West Germany); 11, 11.4 (Korth);
12.75, 11.7 (J. Isles, Limassol, Cyprus); 13, 11.6 (Korth); 19,
10.6 (Korth); 22.81, 10.5 (Hurst); Feb. 7.73, 9.9 (Isles); 8.29,
9.8 (Hurst). This is the first major outburst of this Z And-type
variable since 1978 Jan., when the star reached mag 9.2.

NOVA VULPECULAE 1987
Hurst also reports that A. Young, Burwash, England, detected
this object (cf. IAUC 4533) on a photograph exposed Jan. 23.22 UT
with an 0.57-m reflector, the nova being at mpv about 15.

SUPERNOVA 1988C IN UGC 3933
     A. V. Filippenko, University of California at Berkeley, and
W. L. W. Sargent, California Institute of Technology, write: "
Spectra (range 375-1000 nm, resolution 0.6-1.5 nm) obtained on Feb. 8
and 9 with a CCD spectrograph on the Palomar 5-m reflector show
conclusively that the new object in UGC 3933 (IAUC 4534, 4536,
4540) is a type-Ia supernova a few months past maximum. The earlier
conclusions were based on a partially calibrated spectrum in
which the object's spectral shape was misleading, specifically by
an artificial enhancement at red wavelengths."

SUPERNOVA 1987A IN THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD
     R. M. Catchpole and P. A. Whitelock, South African Astronomical
Observatory, telex: "The bolometric lightcurve determined from
UBVRIJHKLM SAAO observations, which was very close to the decay
curve of 56Co between days 130 and 265, has since fallen below this
curve to the extent of 7 percent on day 340. The rates of decline
in different wavebands show considerable variation in behavior."

PERIODIC COMET KOHOUTEK (1986k)
Total visual magnitude estimate (cf. IAUC 4536) by C. S.
Morris, Whitaker Peak, CA (0.26-m reflector): Feb. 8.24 UT, 12.8.

1988 February 9 (4544) Daniel W. E. Green
