SUPERNOVA 1988H IN NGC 5878
Saul Perlmutter and Carl Pennypacker, Berkeley Automated Supernova
Search, report the discovery of a supernova in NGC 5878 (R.A.
= 15h11.0, R.A. = -14 05'), located 22" west and 55" north of the
galaxy's center. On Mar. 3.499 UT, it was at mag about 15.5.
Subsequently the supernova was found to be present on an image taken on
Feb. 12 (mag about 16); the object was absent on a reference image
taken 1987 Apr. 3 to a limiting magnitude of 18.
     S. Djorgovski and G. Meylan report spectral confirmation of
the supernova on Mar. 8. Data obtained with the 4-shooter spectrograph
at the Palomar Observatory 5-m reflector show broad, luminous
H-alpha emission with characteristic P-Cyg profiles.
