SUPERNOVAE 1989C AND 1989D
A. V. Filippenko, University of California at Berkeley, communicates:
"Spectra (range 390-810 nm; resolution 1.5-2 nm) of SN 1989C
and SN 1989D (IAUC 4730) were obtained by M. Dickinson and A. Dey,
also of Berkeley, on Feb. 7 UT with a Cassegrain CCD spectrograph
on the Shane 3-m reflector at Lick Observatory. A verbal description
of the spectra shows that SN 1989C is a peculiar type-II object;
prominent, broad hydrogen Balmer emission lines are present, as is
Na I/He I at 589 nm, but the corresponding absorption lines are weak
or absent. The supernova is surrounded by H II regions. Judging
from the presence of the Si II absorption line at 635.5 nm and other
features, SN 1989D in NGC 2963 is a type-Ia object, probably within 1-2
weeks of maximum brightness."
R. Kirshner, Center for Astrophysics, reports that J. Huchra and
A. Zabludoff, using the Whipple Observatory Multiple Mirror Telescope
and 1.5-m reflector, respectively, obtained spectra on Feb. 7 UT
that show SN 1989D in NGC 2963 to be a type-Ia supernova.
