McNaught provides the following precise position, measured from a 10-s exposure with the Uppsala Southern Schmidt on Aug. 1.4 UT: R.A. = 17h52m04s.72, Dec. = -33d14'31".8 (equinox 1950.0). This is reasonably consistent with the position by Plaut for the 1937 outburst (end figures 04s, 02"), but Duerbeck's tentative identification of the object on the SRC J survey plate is not valid. McNaught notes that the star does appear at mag 21 on that plate (taken on 1974 June 20) and is located 19.5 mm to the right and 29.2 mm up from the southeast corner of Duerbeck's chart; it is at the top left end of a curve of faint stars. The star also appears at mag about 18.5 on the ESO B survey (1976 Apr. 23, the end figures of the measured position being 04s.69, 31".3). It is faint on an R survey plate (1979 July 30) but significantly brighter on an I survey plate only four days later. No image appears on the Franklin Adams (1913 May 10) or Papadopoulos (1973 June 24) charts, and the object was still below the limit (mag 12) of a T-Max 400 exposure by McNaught on 1989 July 27.49 UT. V854 CENTAURI W. A. Lawson, Mount John University Observatory, informs us that, contrary to the report on IAUC 4814, this R-CrB-type star is not in decline. Visual magnitude estimates by V.
