Kirshner and B. Leibundgut, Center for Astrophysics, report that a spectrum of SN 1990F obtained on Mar. 19 UT with the Multiple Mirror Telescope, covering the range 400-900 nm, resembles a type-Ia supernova that was then about 2-3 months past maximum. AX PERSEI C. Rossi, Istituto Astronomico, Universita La Sapienza, Rome; and A. Damineli, V. F. Polcaro, and R. Viotti, Istituto Astrofisica Spaziale CNR, Frascati, write: "The spectrum of the symbiotic star AX Per, which underwent a deep minimum in early 1989, was observed at low resolution with the 1.5-m telescope of the Bologna Astronomical Observatory on 1989 Nov. 15 in the near-infrared (980-1100 nm), and on Dec. 20 and 23 in the blue (450-510 nm) and red (575-688 nm). AX Per displays a low-excitation spectrum with strong emissions of H-alpha (equivalent width, Weq = 4.76 nm) and H-beta (Weq = 1.05 nm). He I is represented by a fairly weak line at 587.6 nm (Weq = 0.05 nm). No emissions of higher-energy lines such as [O III], reported in the literature as being normally present in AX Per, were observed. Unlike what was reported on IAUC 4922, our spectrum shows a fairly strong emission near 501.8 nm (Weq = 0.17 nm), which is due to the Fe II 501.84-nm line. Actually, the blue and red spectrum of AX Per is particularly rich in Fe II emission lines of multiplets 37, 38, 40, 42, 74, and is quite similar to that of BI Cru (cf. Rossi et al. 1988, A.Ap. 206, 279). In the infrared, the fluorescent Fe II 999.7-nm line is stronger than P-delta (Weq = 0.05 and 0.02 nm, respectively). AX Per appears to be surrounded by a high-density, low-temperature envelope, which suggests that the system now is in an active phase." Visual magnitude estimates (cf. IAUC 4915): Jan. 7.1 UT, 9.1 (R. Royer, Lakewood, CA); Feb. 1.1, 9.5 (Royer); Mar. 3.76, 9.5 (A. Boattini, Florence, Italy); 26.87, 9.5 (A. Pereira, Cabo da Roca, Portugal). PERIODIC COMET WILD 4 (1990a) Total visual magnitude estimates (cf. IAUC 4974): Mar. 12.81 UT, 12.3 (B. H. Granslo, Blindern, Norway, 0.20-m reflector); 24.19, 11.5 (C. S. Morris, Pine Mountain Club, CA, 0.26-m reflector); Apr. 13.07, 13.0 (J. E. Bortle, Stormville, NY, 0.32-m reflector). 1990 April 17 (4994) Daniel W. E. Green
