Phillips, Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory, telexes: "A spectrum of SN 1990K obtained on May 31 UT by R. E. Williams with the CTIO 4-m telescope shows that this object is a type-II supernova. The spectrum closely resembles that of SN 1987A approximately 15-20 days after outburst, with strong H-alpha P-Cyg emission and weaker lines due to H-beta, Fe II, Na I, and Ca II. Notably weak is the Ba II 614.2-nm line, which was a strong absorption feature in the spectrum of SN 1987A at this stage." COMET AUSTIN (1989c1) D. Despois, Observatoire de Bordeaux; D. Bockelee-Morvan, Observatoire de Paris, Meudon; G. Paubert, Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimetrique (IRAM); P. Colom, Centro Astronomico de Yebes; and J. Crovisier, Observatoire de Paris, Meudon, report: "We have detected methanol (CH3OH) in comet Austin on May 25 with the IRAM 30-m telescope. The groups of J(2-1) transitions at 96 GHz and J(3-2) at 145 GHz were searched for. The 3(0)-2(0) A+ and 3(1)-2(1) E lines were observed with areas of 0.23 +/- 0.05 and 0.11 +/- 0.04 K km sE-1, respectively. Several other lines may be present at the 2-sigma level." HCN EMISSION FROM MARKARIAN 231 P. Solomon and J. Barrett, State University of New York, Stony Brook; S. Radford and D. Downes, Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimetrique (IRAM), Grenoble; and L. Sage, Max-Planck-Institut fur Radioastronomie, Bonn, communicate: "We report the observation with the IRAM 30-m telescope of emission from the HCN J(1-0) transition at a rest frequency of 89 GHz from the Seyfert I galaxy Markarian 231. The millimeter-wave emission line has a velocity cz = 12 640 +/- 10 km/s, an integrated intensity of 2.6 K km sE-1, and a FWHM linewidth of 205 km/s. Markarian 231, the most luminous galaxy in the local universe, has a far-infrared luminosity of 3 x 10E12 solar luminosities. HCN emission traces very dense molecular gas with a molecular hydrogen (H2) density of at least 10E4 cmE-3. The HCN luminosity of Markarian 231 exceeds the CO luminosity of ordinary large spiral galaxies like the Milky Way. We estimate that Markarian 231 contains approximately 10E10 solar masses of dense molecular gas." 1990 May 31 (5027) Daniel W. E. Green
