Cochran, University of Texas, report: "We obtained spectroscopic observations of (2060) Chiron on 1989 Dec. 24 UT with a long slit CCD spectrograph (range 310-590 nm). No molecular emissions were observed, even after removal of the reflected solar continuum spectrum; the upper limit for a possible CN feature at 388 nm was 2-3 x 10E-16 erg cmE-2 sE-1. This upper limit is a factor of 2-3 less than the detection of CN by Bus et al. (Nature, submitted) on 1990 Jan. 30. This implies that a CN outburst occurred during this intervening period."
