NOVA CYGNI 1992
     P. Garnavich, Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, reports: "A
spectrogram of Nova Cyg 1992, centered at 482.0 nm and covering 50
nm (resolution 0.06 nm FWHM), was obtained on Feb. 22.58 UT with the
DAO 1.2-m telescope. H-beta shows a P-Cyg emission profile with two
strong absorption components at -910 and -1670 km/s. Singly ionized
iron lines at 492.4 and 501.8 nm are also seen with P-Cyg profiles.
The spectrum is very similar to the principal spectrum of Nova Cyg
1978 (V1668 Cyg; Klare, Wolf, and Krautter 1980, A.Ap. 89, 282) one
day after maximum."
     H. Mikuz, Ljubljana, Slovenia, forwards the following photometry
obtained by A. Dolzan, Litija, Slovenia, with a 0.32-m reflector:
Feb. 24.170 UT: V = 4.38 +/- 0.02, B-V = +0.49 +/- 0.02.
Further selected visual magnitude estimates (cf. IAUC 5456):
Feb. 22.206 UT, 4.2 (Mikuz); 22.51, 4.2 (D. Levy, Tucson, AZ);
22.73, 4.6 (P. Rapavy, Rimavska Sobota, Czechoslovakia); 23.05, 4.3
(R. Haver, Rome, Italy); 23.17, 4.7 (M. Verdenet, Bourbon Lancy,
France); 23.733, 4.6 (H. Dahle, Oslo, Norway); 23.957, 4.6 (B. H.
Granslo, Blindern, Norway); 24.18, 4.5 (A. Boattini, Florence,
Italy); 24.21, 5.0 (E. Schweitzer, Strasbourg, France); 24.750, 4.6
(M. Cavagna, Milan, Italy).
(2060) CHIRON
     H. Campins, University of Florida; D. Jewitt, University of
Hawaii; and C. Telesco, Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA, write:
"We report preliminary results from simultaneous visible and
thermal-infrared observations of (2060) Chiron obtained at Mauna Kea on
1991 Nov. 18.6 and 19.6 UT. Visible observations were obtained with
the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope (+ CCD camera). Infrared
observations were obtained using the MSFC 20-pixel bolometer array
at the 3-m NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. The infrared pixel
size was 4".3 x 4".2 (R.A. x Decl.) FWHM. On the first night, we
detected 87 +/- 29 mJy at 19.2 microns [Delta(lambda) = 5.2
microns]. On the second night, we obtained a non-detection at 10.8
microns [Delta(lambda) = 5.3 microns] at the level 12 +/- 7 mJy.
Integration times were 3903 and 2522 s, respectively. The Mould R
magnitude, in an aperture equal to the infrared pixel in size and
shape, is 16.01 +/- 0.02 on both dates."
1992 February 24 (5457) Daniel W. E. Green
