R. M. West and L. Ramirez, European Southern Observatory, have
obtained four 5-min R frames of comet C/1996 J1 with the MPI/ESO
2.2-m telescope + EFOSC II at La Silla at May 13.15 UT. The outer
contours of the coma are elliptical with largest diameters 90" and 120"
in p.a. 45 and 315 deg, respectively, and integrated R = 13. There is a
broad tail in p.a. 315 deg. The central light peak is diffuse and is
surrounded by a fanlike structure opening over 90 deg symmetrically
around p.a. 0 deg.
