COMET 1996 R1
Carl W. Hergenrother, University of Arizona, reports his
discovery of a comet on films taken by Timothy B. Spahr, University
of Florida, and himself at the University of Arizona's site east of
Tucson. The following observations are available:

C. W. Hergenrother and T. B. Spahr (Mount Bigelow). 0.41-m f/3
Schmidt. Comet well condensed, faint tail extending a few arcmin
to the south. Their visual estimates on Sept. 8 suggest m1 about
  11-12.
W. Offutt (Cloudcroft). 0.6-m f/7 Ritchey-Chretien + CCD. Roughly
circular coma about 4'.25 across with 35" condensation. No tail
  on 60-second exposures.

SUPERNOVA 1986P IN NGC 5763
     J. Mueller reports her discovery of an apparent supernova of
mag about 17 on a IIIa-J plate taken with the 1.2-m Oschin Schmidt
Telescope on 1986 July 2 by E. Helin and Mueller in the course of
the second Palomar Sky Survey. The candidate is located 8" west
and 6" south of the center of NGC 5763 (R.A. = 14h49m.0, Decl. =
+12 29', equinox 2000.0). A Palomar J plate taken on 1993 Mar. 3
by C. Brewer and Mueller shows nothing at the position; N. Reid
also reports that an F plate taken on 1986 June 13 by W. Sargent
and Mueller shows no object at the position, indicating the
apparent supernova was < 3 weeks old when photographed. The image
quality corresponds to nearby images indicating that it is very
unlikely that the object is asteroidal in nature or a plate defect.
