Circular No. 2231 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. Cable Address: SATELLITES, NEWYORK Western Union: RAPID SATELLITE CAMBMASS INTERSTELLAR CARBON MONOXIDE Dr. William E. Howard, National Radio Astronomy Observatory, communicates the following announcement. The National Radio Astronomy Observatory and the Bell Telephone Laboratories announce the discovery of interstellar carbon monoxide (CO) at 115 GHZ (2.6 mm) by Keith B. Jefferts of Bell Telephone Laboratories, Murray Hill, N.J. and by Arno A. Penzias and Robert W. Wilson of Bell Telephone Laboratories, Holmdel, N.J. using the 36 foot telescope of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory on Kltt Peak. The CO line was first observed April 4 and appears in emission in at least five galactic sources including Ori A, Sgr A, Sgr B2, W39, and W51. In Ori A, the chief feature of the CO spectrum is a line 2 MHz (5 km/sec) wide at half intensity with an approximate antenna temperature of 39K. This feature has an approximate angular extent of one degree, larger than the continuum source. The observed spectrum in Sgr A is complicated and extends over a range of at least 100 km/sec. The radial velocities computed from the features observed in each of the above sources is in good agreement with velocities computed for each source from line observations at longer wavelengths. Observations are in progress. COMET BENNETT (1969i) B. Milet, Nice Observatory, sends the following precise positions: 1970 UT R. A. (1950) Decl.
