Circular No. 2276 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. Cable Address: SATELLITES, NEWYORK Western Union: RAPID SATELLITE CAMBMASS PERIODIC COMET ENCKE Dr. Z. Sekanina, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, reports an attempt to give a brightness ephemeris for this comet. The predicted magnitudes are total, in the international photo-visual system, and refer to observations made by the method applied by M. Beyer (1933, Astron. Nachr. 250, 233). The prediction is based on an analysis of Beyer's preperihelion observations at the apparitions of 1937, 1947, 1951 and 1961. The ascertained secular decrease, on the average 0.1 magnitude per revolution, has been taken into account. The postperihelion prediction is very uncertain; it is based mostly on the 1964 apparition and reflects the indisputable perihelion asymmetry in the comet's light curve. 1970 ET m1 1970/71 ET m1 Oct. 21 14.0 Dec. 20 7.0 31 12.5 30 6.7 Nov. 10 11.1 Jan. 9 7.1 20 9.8 19 > 9 30 8.7 29 >12 Dec. 10 7.8 Feb. 8 15?
